Lymphatic Disorders We Treat
About Lymphatic Disorders
The leak of the lymphatic fluid can lead to in devastating consequences that can jeopardies life due to lose of the important nutrients coagulation and immune factors.
The lymphatic leaks include: chylothorax, chylopericardium, chylous ascities, chylouria, chyloptesis, lymphocele, lymphorria.
The causes of the chylous leaks can be broadly defined as traumatic-due to direct and indirect physical insult, such as surgery, or blunt trauma, and non- traumatic that occur without recent physical injury.Disorders We Treat
Traumatic Chilothorax
Traumatic chylothorax occurs most often due to iatrogenic injury of the thoracic duct and lymphatic system during thoracic, cardiac…
Non-traumatic Chylothorax
In this condition the chylothorax occurs spontaneously without recent trauma. It can have associated with disease, such as lymphoma, previous radiation. One of the main challenges in patients with non-traumatic chylothorax is the detection of the source of the chylous leak.
Plastic Bronchitis
Plastic bronchitis is a condition where children and adults cough the casts of their lungs (Figure). This condition can be extremely debilitating an in some rare cases be life threatening.
Chylous Ascites
The most common causes of this condition, are trauma, surgery or oncological disorders. In certain cases, the chylous ascites can happen without apparent cause and is called idiopathic
Chyluria
Chyluria is a rare condition in which chyle leaks in the urinary collecting system. Clinically the patients with chyluria urinate “milky” urine.
Genital Edema and Lymphorrhea
The genital edema, such as a scrotal edema is often called in the literature, lymphatic reflux. In these patients the lymph from the abdomen (chyle) and lower extremities can flow into the testicular area.
Protein Losing Enteropathy
Protein losing enteropathy is a condition where there is a loss of the valuable proteins and nutrients in the intestinal lumen. This condition is often occurring in patients with congenital heart disease, especially in patients who were born with single ventricle and underwent Fontan surgery.
Lymphatic Anomalies
The lymphatic malformation is a group of the lymphatic disorders, that include conditions such as Generalized Lymphatic Anomaly, Kaposiform Lymphangiomatosis and Gorham-Stout Disease. More detailed classification of these disorders, can be found on the website of the International Society for Study of the Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA).
